Polaroid

My Polaroid is an object I like to take when I am traveling or out for the day.

Often I will stop people and ask if they would like to have their picture taken, and let them know I will never have a copy of it. The physical copy they get is the only one in existence, a captured moment in time just for them for free. I have taken photos of couples, families, best friends, pets, and more. I will never see those photos again but knowing that they’re out there and that they are cherished is more than enough.

From concept to final design

In a CAD-like layout, I set out to deconstruct a polaroid and show its internal machinery. Below I have detailed my process when it comes to creating complex visuals and turn them into designs that are accessible and while creating interest.

Starting from a fascination with how cameras work, I wanted to see what it would be like to deconstruct an instant camera with its self-printing capabilities. After some initial research, I began these quick study sketches above to find the rhythm of the object and how to apply it to a 2D space.

After those fun color concepts came to life, I began drafting concrete layout plans using measurements and tracing paper for precise and consistent drafts to transfer to a digital platform.

I used the blueprints I made above to create the illustrations below. After each piece was made, I combined them into one big spread and added information about the polaroid in the negative space.
